uilding homes that hearken
back to a former age when fine architecture was revered and quality building was
the order of the day makes a lot of sense on many levels. There is a reason that
many buyers seek out older homes in spite of their maintenance and upkeep issues;
the homes of yesteryear hold a charm and grace captured in their classical architectural
roots that is easily distinguishable from their contemporary counterparts that lack
the scale and proportion inherent to good design. The New Old House concept is to
capture the essence of historic architecture in a new home so that we can have the
charm and warmth embodied in that architecture, but take advantage of all the technologies
and amenities of a new home.
t Connor Homes we build New
Old Homes that cross a wide spectrum of historic vernaculars, from Georgian Colonials
of the early eighteenth century, Federal style from the latter eighteenth century,
Greek Revival from the mid nineteenth century, Shingle and bungalow style from late
nineteenth century and early twentieth century, and Colonial Revival from that same
time period. The common thread for all these vernaculars is a firm foothold in classical
architecture. We design our homes with an understanding of the need for a modern
floorplan and amenities, and we often design to regional variations that dictate
a different or interesting twist while adhering to the principles that define the
various vernaculars.
Manufacturing the New Old Home
ontrary to what most
builders and homeowners think, the more complex and sophisticated the architectural
details, the more they lend themselves to offsite manufacturing. With today’s high
tech machinery and software, it makes increasing sense to take advantage of those
advances. After all, you wouldn’t think to build a new car in your driveway with
parts from the auto parts store, when it can be done so much better and more efficiently
in a factory. So why do we continue to think that high end homes have to be built
and assembled on site, one raw piece at a time? The answer lies in the fact that
sophisticated machinery can only do what we tell it to do, and that is where the
expertise we have at Connor Homes comes in. Our dedicated staff of professional
architects and designers has the knowledge to design in vernacular styles with authentic
accuracy, and so in turn, our manufacturing technology and team of experienced carpenters
can be used to efficiently produce beautiful and exquisite architectural details.
This unique ability is the culmination of many years of research and development
by our company to find the best, smartest and most efficient ways to produce authentic
historic architectural details for our customers. Add to that the craftsmen who
have spent many years with our company and who have an uncommon understanding of
fine woodworking, and it is easy to see why our company is redefining how homes
are built today.
